Rhelion Life Sciences (CSE: RHEL) (OTCBB: TRUFF)  has announced a new agreement with Toronto's University Health Network to supply its experimental psilocybin drug, PEX010, for a randomized clinical trial in patients with Parkinson's disease and depression.

The study, called PSI-PARK, will investigate whether psilocybin can safely reduce symptoms of depression in people with Parkinson's disease, a population that has historically been excluded from many psychedelic clinical trials because of safety concerns.

If you're unfamiliar, PEX010 contains naturally derived psilocybin, the psychedelic compound found in hallucinogenic mushrooms. Researchers have increasingly studied psilocybin for depression and other psychiatric disorders, but considerably less is known about its use in people with neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's.

If PSI-PARK produces encouraging results, Rhelion could have another potential indication for PEX010 without having to finance the clinical trial itself.

Rhelion isn't paying for the trial

That's an important part of this.

University Health Network will sponsor and conduct PSI-PARK under principal investigator Dr. Joshua Rosenblat. Rhelion's wholly owned subsidiary, Filament Health, is supplying PEX010 as the investigational drug.

In other words, Rhelion gets its drug tested in another disease without assuming the costs and risks associated with sponsoring the entire study. For a small biotechnology company, that's not trivial.

Clinical trials can consume enormous amounts of capital. Having outside researchers generate clinical data using your drug can potentially expand its value while preserving cash for other development programs.

There's already some interesting evidence

This isn't the first time psilocybin has been tested in Parkinson's patients.

A small 2025 open-label pilot study involving patients with mild-to-moderate Parkinson's disease and depression and/or anxiety reported no serious adverse events, while improvements in depression and anxiety persisted through the final assessment.

Make no mistake: that doesn't prove psilocybin works.

The study was small, patients knew they were receiving psilocybin, and there was no placebo-controlled comparison. But those results provide enough reason to investigate the treatment under more rigorous conditions.

If PSI-PARK produces similar results in a randomized setting, the investment case becomes considerably more interesting.

One drug, multiple opportunities

The bigger story for investors is what Rhelion is trying to do with PEX010.

Following its acquisition of Filament earlier this year, Rhelion gained a standardized, pharmaceutical-grade psilocybin drug that's already being used across a large number of clinical research programs.

Rhelion says PEX010 is supporting more than 80 academic and philanthropic studies worldwide. It's being investigated across areas including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, substance-use disorders, and cancer-related distress.

That's potentially valuable because Rhelion doesn't necessarily have to develop a different drug for every indication.

Instead, outside researchers can continue testing PEX010 across different diseases. Each successful study could add clinical evidence around the same underlying asset.

And Parkinson's-related depression would represent another potentially interesting market.

According to the Parkinson's Foundation, approximately 90,000 Americans are diagnosed with Parkinson's every year, and depression can affect up to half of people with the disease.

That doesn't mean every one of those patients would eventually become eligible for psilocybin therapy. But it demonstrates why finding better treatments for depression in this population could represent a meaningful commercial opportunity.

Now Rhelion needs validation

This is still an early-stage biotech story.

Rhelion doesn't have an approved psychedelic drug generating meaningful commercial revenue, and there's no guarantee PEX010 will ultimately become one. Psychedelic drug development also faces regulatory, reimbursement, and commercialization questions that investors shouldn't ignore.

But Rhelion is building something worth watching.

It has one standardized psilocybin drug being evaluated across dozens of studies, and outside institutions are helping generate much of that clinical evidence.

PSI-PARK adds Parkinson's-related depression to that list.

If even a handful of these programs eventually produce compelling clinical data, PEX010 could become considerably more valuable than it is today.
