Amneal Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: AMRX) just received FDA approval for lanreotide injection, giving the company an immediate entry into a U.S. market approaching $1 billion in annual sales.
The company plans to launch the drug immediately.
Amneal's lanreotide references Ipsen's Somatuline Depot, which generated approximately $983 million in U.S. sales during the 12 months ended July 2026, according to IQVIA data cited by Amneal.
If you’re unfamiliar, Lanreotide is an injectable treatment used for acromegaly, a rare condition caused by excessive growth hormone, as well as certain neuroendocrine tumors and carcinoid syndrome.
The generic advantage
Indeed, this news bodes well for Amneal's continued expansion into complex generic drugs.
Traditional generic pills can attract significant competition and pricing pressure. Complex injectables are generally harder to develop and manufacture, which can limit competition and create more attractive commercial opportunities.
Amneal's lanreotide also received the FDA's Competitive Generic Therapy designation, a program intended to encourage generic competition in markets where competition is limited. And Amneal will manufacture the drug itself using dedicated large-scale production capacity.
The approval comes as the company's broader business continues to grow.
Amneal generated $796 million in second-quarter revenue, up 10% year over year. Net income increased 157% to $58 million, while adjusted EBITDA rose 12% to $206 million. Management subsequently raised its full-year 2026 revenue guidance to $3.1 billion to $3.2 billion.
The company already sells roughly 300 complex generic, specialty, and biosimilar medicines, with its products accounting for more than 160 million prescriptions annually. Lanreotide adds another potentially meaningful product to that portfolio.
Of course, you shouldn’t assume Amneal will capture anything close to the entire $983 million market. Generic competition can push prices lower, and Amneal still needs to take market share. But even capturing a modest portion of a market this large could provide another source of revenue growth.
